Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering
Electronics engineers work in the design, development, and production of a wide range of applications used by everyone every day. They find solutions to the practical problems affecting our daily lives as they work on computer networks, signal processing, telecommunications, wireless systems, integrated circuit design, optoelectronic systems, and software development. Electronic engineers train to be proficient in BOTH the hardware and the software components of information technology.
In addition to civil applications, electronics engineering facilitates the development of defense applications of great consequence to homeland security. Being situated in Israel, one of the leading countries in developing defense applications, this department holds immense importance for Israeli students. The phenomenon of Israel’s currently thriving high technology sector was born with the State of Israel in 1948, as the newly-created Israel Defense Forces established a branch called the Science Corps. The corps developed new arms and a variety of electric and electronic appliances for the IDF, technologies that it could not obtain from abroad. In a short 60-year time span, Israel has developed some of the best institutions of education and scientific research in the world. Today, more than half of Israel’s exports are high-technology products and services.
In the College’s Electronics Engineering Department, students begin their studies by acquiring broad scientific background and studying Mathematics, Physics, English, basic principles of Electric and Electronic Theory, Software, and the use of computers. During the latter two years, students delve into subjects unique to Electronics Engineering and focus on one of two tracks that they can select. These tracks are specializations at the forefront of engineering practice: Communications and VLSI.
Track 1 – Communications
The track specializing in Communications provides students with the theoretical basis for the fundamentals of modern electronic communications and in communications methods and modern systems for all types of communications systems- analog, digital, wireless, and landline. This specialization includes an advanced laboratory where students can apply their knowledge of studied theoretical subjects.
Track 2 – VLSI
The VLSI track provides students with knowledge of simulation, design, and testing of miniaturized digital and analog electronic circuits in semiconductor technologies. Students learn software development and computer-aided design methods used by advanced high-tech industries.
Students in the Electronics Engineering Department carry out a final project during their final year of studies. The final project is usually carried out at an external company under the supervision of a company mentor and an academic mentor from the College.
